It is often stated that the coefficient is “between 9 and 12 kWh/m³” without explanation. Three concrete parameters explain this range:

  • The composition of natural gas: the gas has different methane content depending on its country of extraction. Gas rich in methane releases more heat per m³, which raises the coefficient.
  • The altitude of the municipality: at higher altitudes, atmospheric pressure decreases. One cubic meter of gas then contains less matter, which reduces the available energy. Mountain municipalities have a lower coefficient than those in the plains.
